Problems & pests

What are hermaphrodite plants and how do I prevent them?

Short answer

They are plants that grow both male and female parts, usually triggered by stress, and the pollen can ruin a whole crop.

The usual causes are light leaking in during the dark period, heat, drought or bad handling, and sometimes just unstable genetics. Check the tent for light leaks, keep the climate steady and be gentle with the plants. Look for pollen sacs (small bananas or balls) and pull them off early, or remove the plant if it is carrying a lot.

A steady climate controller cuts temperature swings, and a tent that does not leak light matters just as much.
