Nutrients

Can I grow plants without adding nutrients?

Short answer

Only for a while, and only in a rich living soil or a strongly pre-fertilised mix. In coco, hydro and standard potting soil, plants need feed from the start or soon after.

Pre-fertilised soils carry enough nutrients for the first few weeks (often around 3–4, depending on the mix and pot size). After that, plants in a normal mix start to fade, usually with pale lower leaves. Good living soil with enough compost can carry plants much further, but even there many growers top-dress or add a bloom feed in flower.

Coco and hydro are basically empty, so everything has to come from your nutrients. If you want the low-feeding route, a proper living soil is the way to start.
