What's the best soil mix for growing indoors?

Short answer

Go for a light, airy, pre-fertilised mix with roughly 20–30% perlite so water drains and roots get air. Garden soil is a bad idea indoors: it compacts in pots and brings pests.

Most problems with bagged soil come down to two things: it stays too wet, or it's so hot with fertiliser that seedlings burn. A decent indoor mix feels fluffy when you squeeze it, holds together loosely and drains within a minute or so. Target a soil pH of about 6.0–6.8 once it's watered in.

If you don't want to feed much, a living soil with compost and organic matter does most of the work for you and you water with plain water for a long time. Otherwise a normal pre-fertilised mix plus a bit of perlite is fine. Look at our soil mixes and living soils, for example Monster Soil 11 L.
