What does silicon do for plants?

Short answer

Silicon builds stronger cell walls, which helps stems and the plant's stress tolerance against heat, drought and some pests. It's a nice extra, not something a beginner needs.

Plants take silicon up as silicic acid and deposit it in their tissue. Research in several crops shows better tolerance of drought and salt stress, though the effect depends on the plant. For flowering plants the proof of bigger yields is thinner, so I'd call it an optional extra once your feeding and climate are in order.

Dose by label. For GEN200 Control (orthosilicic acid) that is 15 ml per 100 L (about 0.15 ml/L) in the irrigation water with every watering, and for foliar use 1 ml/L once or twice a week, never in direct light. Add silicon to the water first, before the other nutrients, then check pH last, since some silicon products shift it. Other options: DutchPro Silica and Atami Silic Boost, both dosed per the manufacturer.
