Start with seedlings and cuttings at a higher hang or dimmed down, then bring the light closer or turn it up as they establish. Check the top leaves a few times a week. Pale, bleached or upward-curling tips mean it's too strong.
Always use a timer; doing the light cycle by hand leads to mistakes sooner or later. An analogue timer does the job, and there are more options in timers and control boxes.
