How does an LED grow light work?

Short answer

A current passes through many small diodes and each one gives off light. Plant LEDs are tuned to the colours that drive photosynthesis, and they turn more of the power into light than a bulb does.

Most white grow LEDs are blue diodes coated with a phosphor, plus some red diodes. The result covers the red and blue plants use, with extra green and far-red added. Efficiency is what separates good lamps from poor ones. Good modern LEDs deliver around 2.5-3 µmol of light per joule.

They still make heat, but much less radiant heat than an HPS, so the lamp can hang closer to the plants. The heat that remains sits in the heat sink, so the tent still needs ventilation. Common designs are panels, bars and quantum boards. See all LED grow lights.
