Does light spectrum matter, and what is a full-spectrum LED?

Short answer

It matters somewhat. Full-spectrum LEDs use white diodes that cover the whole visible range, plus red, and are a good choice for the whole life cycle.

Plants use mostly red and blue light, but a broad spectrum with some green works well and is better for photosynthesis in dense canopies. Extra blue gives tighter, more compact plants, and extra far-red can make them stretch. Most home growers don't need to fine-tune any of this. Pick a good full-spectrum lamp and keep the intensity right.

A white-looking lamp has a practical side too: it is much easier to spot pests or deficiencies than under a purple glow. See full-spectrum LED lights.
